Computer network equipments are also known as computer network devices. This computer network is encompassed with various different devices to share various elements such as data, applications, voice and transmit and other communication links to other networks and files. The equipments are the physical parts that are directly connected to the computer to get the network.
Day by day, with the growth in technology, the network working devices are also increasing and hence, there are numerous means and devices to get a computer network. The most common devices amongst them are individual computers, server, hub, switch, bridges, routers, modems, printers, gateways, network interface cards, cabling and wireless access point and many more. Hence, networking is full of computer networking equipments which is the most popular computer network equipment used at present and hence is discussed in more detail below.
Routers: Routers are one of the most important pieces of equipment in the area of computer networking. Routers are there to determine the destination address for the data in the best way with the help of their software called routing software. Routers are there to make sure the data communication between the computer and the net runs smoothly and correctly without interruption. Thus, routers are known to route and forward the networking information from one destination to another destination.
Network Interface Cards: These are another most important device in the field of networking. These cards are connected to the components which need to be networked. Today, mostly throughout the world the whole of the computers and laptops are built with these interface cards only. Wireless network interface cards are also available for people who use laptops. There are different forms of network interface cards as they were firstly available in ISA card form which are no longer in use now, and then there was the arrival of PCI cards which are still being used. For laptops, these wireless cards term to be truly beneficial and when it comes to computers, there are network wires that are connected to the network port of the network interface card.
Hubs: Hubs are one of the simplest devices for networking facilitating the broader use. They are able to connect to multiple computers locally, by easily accessing options with each other. They are similar to routers in performing the task. Hubs and switches are always mistaken by the people to be similar, but they are not similar.
Switches: Switches turn to be an active device for networking when compared with hub. Switch provides the same function as a hub or a bridge, but along with this it has the function of connecting two computers, at a time, together for temporary use. Switches are there to forward the data to the computers, rather than broadcasting the data to all its ports.
Thus, routers, hubs, switches and network interface cards, as discussed above are just a few equipments of a computer network. However, there are many other devices and equipments which play different roles in a computer network.

Control Panel > Network And Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.
That will bring up something very similar to XP's Network Properties window.

Go to http://www.logmein.com
Download the hamachi free program if you want file access, or the logmein program for full remote access.

check in your device manager if its listed under network adapters, it might be disabled or really not there. Just reconnect the adapter and let it be detected by windows then reinstall the driver.

A wireless router would work, but you would have to buy and install wireless cards in each of the 12 computers if they aren't already equipped to handle wireless.
If you're not opposed to running network cable to each of the computers, then a router and a switch would be ideal. You wouldn't have to "daisy-chain" them together as mentioned below. Your internet connection connects to the router, the router connects to the switch, and the switch connects to each of the computers.

Yes, Data transmitted over the copper-cored Cable line has to be modulated. The term modem is not disambiguous to a Phone Modem. There are Null modems, for example. Any piece of equipment that modulates and demodulates electronic signals to transmit data is a true modem. There is a cat5 cable connecting your PC and your Cable Modem because the data transfer rates are higher than could be supported by other media (such as an RJ-11 cable), and most SOHO routers don;t have USB ports, so to interface, a cable modem HAS to have an RJ-45 port.
Whether cable, POTS, or DSL, these devices are all modems.
