Starting an Internet marketing business is probably the best way of growing a residual income and at the same time achieving your financial freedom. It really sounds easy and fun, yet there are several things that will cross your mind—things that can stop you cold in your tracks.

Time and financial resources.

You need to accept the fact that in order to make money online, you must have enough time alloted and at least some financial resources. The finances can, however, be extremely small – especially in affiliate marketing.

Getting traffic to your online business site is your main priority in starting your Internet marketing business. You will be able to achieve it through advertising your site. Web site advertising can be very expensive – but VERY necessary! Keep in mind that without VISITORS to your site, it will mark the end of your Internet marketing career.

Is there any way to escape expensive online business advertising? Your betcha!

The word “free” does still exist especially on the internet!

There are still low-cost alternatives and even free methods of advertising your Internet marketing business. The free or low-cost advertising alternatives will work, after all it is still a type of promotion that will help you get the targeted traffic that you need for your site. It is NOT TRUE that free or cheap advertising will not work effectively vs expensive advertising mediums. Invest confidence and a “clever thinking” mentality on how you will be able to make it as effective and the free methods will work just as well.

The number one method of free advertising is writing original articles containing fresh and juicy information that will help your website visitors know about your business and the products and services that you are offering. Write your own original articles and sign up with free or low-cost article distribution services that will distribute your articles to publishers around the Internet. If you want a wider distribution of your articles for increased awareness, you may pay for a small fee, but most are free . Once your articles are distributed and published around the Internet with hyperlinks directing to your site, you will have your first set of new web visitors in no time. Keep in mind that if you do not want to write the articles by yourself, you can hire different article writing services that will do the job in exchange of a small fee. Article writing and distribution is one of the best means of Internet marketing promotion.

You may also use weblogs or simply blogs for your Internet marketing business promotion. This is completely free of charge and an ideal way of getting quality content on your website as well as getting repeat visitors who are interested in reading what you have to say. You can write your views about your business or include some photographs of the products you are offering. Do not forget to include your site’s link on your blogs so that your readers can visit your site if they want more information about what you have written on your blogs.

Posting to online forums is another free yet effective way of getting your hyperlinks noticed by many Internet users. There are thousands of online discussion forums out there that offer subjects related to the nature of your online business. You may also help other individuals by posting your comments or suggestions that you know will help them on an issue. The more assistance that you can offer, the more your name will stand out of the crowd as the authority on the subject, and the more likely forum readers will click on your website hyperlink to find out more about you and what you are all about. It is one of the best ways of making sales without even selling actual products or services.

Why spend a lot if there are free and low-cost advertising alternatives for your Internet marketing promotion? With some careful planning and very little spending (if any), you will be able to earn a lot of money from your online business.

Extranet are fashionable techie jargon nowadays, and likely to pop up in all sorts of contexts – conversations, articles or even conference talks. Yet the meaning of these words is somewhat elusive and overlapping and might sometimes leave one scratching one’s pate. It would therefore be in order to get the definitions out of the way at the very outset.

INTRANET – The term’s similarity with “internet” is likely to cause a little confusion. Unlike the internet, which is public network of computers across the globe, an intranet is a private network of computers which functions only within the boundaries of an organization. It also differs vastly from the internet in terms of its audience & strategic objectives. It is true however, that an intranet might sometimes use the internet as a vehicle to connect across facilities and locations. Even so, access is still restricted and not available to the general public.

Audience & Objectives of an Intranet

Audience – Employees

Objectives

- Information Repository

- Communication

- Automation of Processes

- Training

- Team Collaboration

During early days, the main purpose of an intranet was merely to act as a substitute to the back and forth medium of mails, and act as a central repository where employees could access company information and resources.

Some Practical Uses

- Company Policies

- Development & Training

- Employee Directories

- Project Management

- In-house Social Network

In the modern context however, intranets are a vital component of a company processes which enable real time communication across company levels, facilitate & make efficient information flows, and enable real time collaboration between groups spread across locations. This is an interesting case study of intranet use.

The audience of an intranet is primarily the staff. It facilitates and improves the efficiency of staff work, or it may act as a forum for social communication, mutual learning, or managers at the top echelons use it to communicate company objectives and policies to the lower levels.

EXTRANET – Like an Intranet, an extranet is a private network. But rather than being directed internally for staff needs, it is an outward facing network used to securely collaborate, share information or integrate operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses.

Since the abovementioned parties are spread over diverse locations, extranets use the internet as a vehicle to connect to these parties. A company might have multiple dedicated extranets for different key partners or clients. It can sometimes also be seen as an extension of an “intranet” where external parties are brought into the fold of the company’s private network.

Audience & Objectives of an Extranet

Audience – Suppliers, Vendors, Partners, Clients

Objectives

- Share Information

- Communication

- Integration of Processes

- Training

- Collaboration

The possibilities created by information technology have spurred new approaches like the “supply chain” approach which have redefined attitudes towards businesses and their interrelations. The movement is towards greater information exchange and integration with external parties. Enter extranets.

Some Practical Uses

- Client Support

- Product Demos

- On-Line Catalogues

- Joint Project Management

Like intranets, extranets enable communication, information sharing & collaboration. But the information in this case is very different from intranets and specific to the needs of the vendors, partners, or clients it is created for. One example of an extranet would be one created for a key client of a software services provider. This would serve as a space for managing project timelines, communicating specifications, sharing project resources, providing deliverables etc.

Another valuable application of extranets is to provide support to key customers. Online knowledge bases, training materials, discussion forums and an interactive help desk are a few examples of ways to serve an important client using an extranet.

A study conducted by Highbeam Research in 2001, with top Times companies showed that 38% of respondents now give customers online access to information and reports. A further 23% plan to implement extranets by the end of 2002.

Uses

- Share Information

- Joint Projects

- Product Training

- Customer Support

- Cross Selling

- Feedback Mechanism

CUSTOMER PORTAL – A “Customer portal” is an extranet built specifically for an important customer. Hence it is a subset of the term “extranet”. It is a unique environment created specifically for the needs of a particular client. The purposes may be as varied as collaboration needs of working jointly on a project for a client, to providing dedicated support and training materials to an important client, to merely a shared information area where product specification documents, contracts, reports etc are shared with a client leading to finalization of a contract.

Customer portals in addition to enhancing efficiency of customer service, also lead to more satisfied customers and offer a good opportunity for cross selling and getting feedback. A company can use its customer portal to regularly supply information on related and new products to customers, and present it in a manner appealing to that particular client.

Broad Benefits of Intranets/Extranets/Customer Portals

1. Increased Productivity: Intranets/extranets enable instant access to important internal and external information; hence the lag between those who have the information and those who need it is next to nil. With just a few clicks, users can access data held in any database the organization. This allows employees to perform their jobs faster, and more accurately.

2. Communication: Intranets/Extranets are powerful tools for communication within an organization, vertically and horizontally and across organizational boundaries. This could mean anything from company policies being communicated across the organization to working together with a client of a project.

3. Auditing: Intranets/Extranets allow a clear visibility into information flows and business processes. Details of projects & files are captured at each step and responsibilities, time & changes can easily be ascertained and retraced at any stage.

4. Operations & Management: Intranet/Extranet project management tools allow companies to move to a “project based” system, where cross functional and cross organizational teams can quickly be convened irrespective of location for different tasks. It also allows managers to spend less time “being there” to personally supervise & monitor progress of activities. They need to simply log in to create projects, assign responsibilities and track progress.

5. Enhanced Collaboration: Because distance is not a constraint, teams can quickly get together and work jointly in real time in a virtual environment without actually being there.

6. Capture & Share Knowledge: Intranets & Extranets also act as forums where different people can get together, share their expertise and learn from each other in the process.

Are they a Big Business Thing?

According to a study by Modalis Research Technologies, 70 percent of small and medium-sized U.S. businesses feel that an intranet is important.

The Hosted, SAAS Model – Going by the massive investment needed to develop a customized intranet/extranet system a few years back, it might not have made sense for a small to mid sized company to get the system then from a cost-benefit perspective.

But in recent times, the hosted, SAAS, approach to application delivery has made available these technologies even to the smallest business at a minimal price.

Changing Environment – Moreover, the changing business landscape, even small businesses have to manage distributed teams and increasing client expectations. May it be traveling sales persons, an outsourced development team based in Asia, work-from-home executives, or a key client with special support needs – it makes sense to have an intranet/extranet portal where they can log in, and share information and work together.

Possible Uses – It can be put to a multitude of uses, like displaying announcements, uploading policy documents, sharing employee directories or managing projects. Modalis Research found that one of the ways companies used their intranet was to put up their daily lunch menu!

Beats Email! – Considering the fact that an intranet solution costs little more than setting up business email, it’s a logical next step compared to the cumbersome and confusing method of sharing information through mail.

(Former?) Disadvantages

1. Expensive – Intranets/Extranets used to be very expensive to implement and maintain. This included software development costs, costs of hardware, training costs, costs of specialized technical staff etc. But the new hosted model allows companies to have a ready made solution for a reasonable number-of-users based monthly fee.

2. Security – Security of intranets and especially extranets can be a big concern since sensitive business information is transferred over the public medium of internet. But there are many hosted intranet/extranet solution companies which have an impeccable record where it comes to safeguarding client information. The importance of security only underlines the need to be very careful when choosing a solution provider.

Introduction to Selection Criteria

KEY FACTORS

- Features/Customizability

- Company Background

- Cost

- User Friendliness

- Security

Implementing any software in the organization involves a commitment, and especially intranet/extranet software because of its organization wide implications. It is therefore important to make an informed and well researched choice while choosing between different solutions. Companies looking to set up an intranet for the first time may not even have a clear idea of what tools might be necessary to facilitate operations.

The decision needs to be very broad based, depending upon specific factors – the feature set & costs of the solution being the most immediate; as well as general factors, such as a company’s security record, background etc.

A comprehensive list of factors to be considered for buying intranet/extranet/ software is listed below and will be elaborated in other sections of the site.

- What features are on offer as part of the solution? Does it allow customization according to my needs?

- What are the costs? How do the costs behave as the organization scaled up?

- What is the company background?

- Is the solution user friendly? How steep is the learning curve? Will it require technical staff?

- Is my data safe?

The field of computer technology is separated from all others by the very nature of technology itself. Technology has always been around, from the invention of the wheel to the sub-atomic particle splitters that allow us to harness the power of the atom. Until the computer age, technology was a vague term representing the advancement of science as a whole. When someone speaks of technology today, however, they are almost always referring to the dissemination of information by electronic means. Technological growth in this area has been nothing short of miraculous, with advances outpacing the market for which they are intended.

When modern computer technology must be incorporated into a working model suitable for serving the needs of individuals and businesses, it is the information technology professionals that we rely on. From software development to data security and all points in between, specialists in the world of IT put technology to work for us. It’s fitting, then, that for a non-traditional field, the importance of education is equally non-traditional.

When computers and the technology surrounding them began making their mark on the business community, there were few academic programs in place for those wishing to enter the field. Some of the greatest software developments of the last twenty years were created by engineering school dropouts who were heavy on ideas and light on technical training. Little has changed since then, and while many educational institutions have seen the graduations of class after class of computer science majors, not all of the working professional in IT chose to go that route.

Computer network engineering is one area of information technology where experience isn’t trumped by education, and the number of people working in the field without bachelor level degrees under their belt is growing. Many receive some form of training through intensive diploma or certification tracts, though associate level programs are by far the most popular option.

Even those with extensive computer networking experience often seek some form of formal training to round out their skill sets and curry favor with potential employers, and the move toward a two year program as the new ideal has been met with industry wide acceptance. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, “A number of companies (in IT support positions) are becoming more flexible about requiring a college degree… Relevant computer experience may substitute for formal education.”

This makes IT related positions such as computer networking engineer popular among new students who want to quickly enter the workforce, as well those who have the experience but wish to augment it with a relevant degree that requires less of a commitment than a bachelor program.

The number of people who want to establish an online business increasing every year and as many countries move deeper and deeper into recession, it is believed that more and more individuals, especially those directly affected by the financial crisis, to opt to become Internet entrepreneurs particularly because of the fact that it involves very little capital. Yet, many people who plan to become Internet marketer do end up as one.

One of the reasons for this is that they are intimidated with Internet marketing. In fact, it is suspected that many people do not even though exactly what Internet marketing is. This articles aims to provide an Internet marketing definition that will be easily understood by ordinary individuals. You can find other Internet marketing definitions in other places but most of them are full of jargon that ordinary folks end more confused with them. As part of providing you with an easy-to-understand Internet marketing definition, I will briefly describe how the Internet marketing process works so you will better appreciate this exciting and profitable activity.

Internet marketing is actually a broad term that encompasses any activity of promotion and advertising of a product or a service online. This is the most simplest Internet marketing definition that you can find. In Internet marketing, you can either be promoting your own product or service or that of another person or company. The latter is a practice that is known as affiliate marketing and the person selling the product of service of another person or company is called an affiliate.

As I’ve said, I will describe how Internet marketing works as part of providing you with an Internet marketing definition. I.M. Starts with a niche in which you will either choose an existing product or service to promotes or you can create your own. Next, you must choose a method of promoting that product or service.

I hope this Internet marketing definition is able to show you how simple I.M is.

A computer network is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software. This interconnected system will share services and interact through a communications link.

A computer network is very helpful in a business. Most of the time a business will have more than one computer set up and it often very beneficial to network all of the computers in the office. A local area network (LAN) will connect your company’s computers. This will allow them to share and exchange different types of information. If you haven’t considered networking your office computers, listen to these reasons.

There are several types of computer networks. A computer network can be very simple, such as only connecting two computers or a computer and a printer, or it can be very complex, connecting millions of computers and devices. Here is a list of different computer network types.

The smallest type of network is a Personal Area Network (PAN). This type of computer network connects a computer to a number of devices. These devices may include, but are not limited to, printers, PDAs, and telephones. Usually these are located very close to a computer. A Local Area Network (LAN) is used to network a small geographical area. An example of this type of computer network is a home network with two or more computers or computers that are connected in a workplace. A version of a LAN is a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN).

A Campus Area Network (CAN) is ideal for a university but they are also found in industrial facilities. This type of computer network connects computers in a number of buildings. This is generally accomplished through bridging and routing. A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) consists of any number of interconnected LANs and WANs but it will not extend certain boundaries, such as those of a town, city, or metropolitan area. Many of these are operated at public utilities and are used by businesses and individuals in the area.

A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a step up from a MAN. This type of computer network can cross metropolitan or even national boundaries. The best known WAN is the Internet. This computer network uses routers and public communication links to carry data. Many WANs are run by private companies and restricted, unlike the Internet. Although these are the MAN types of network that most users come across there are other computer networks ranging from as small as a Desktop Area Network (DAN) to a very large Global Area Network (GAN).

Humanity today has acquired a new habit of entertaining itself. It involves clicking on an ingenious little gadget called the mouse. That’s right. In this era of the Internet, men and women everywhere are turning to their computers in increasing numbers to be entertained. The proliferation of online technologies, along with improved connectivity, cheaper hardware and increased computer literacy, has propelled the rise in popularity of the Internet in recent times.

Of all the wonderful ways that the Internet has given us to entertain ourselves, Internet radio is an extremely popular one. All one needs is a computer with an Internet connectivity to unleash the most exhaustive range of radio stations on one’s desktop at the click of the mouse. It is interesting to note that Internet radio, however, is not a very novel innovation. In other words, Internet radio networks have been around for quite a while now. It is only recently, with the proliferation of Internet technology and faster connectivity, that the phenomenon called Internet radio has truly come of age. Today, the listener is pampered with a bevy of channels (or stations), catering to specific areas of interest. This is becoming a standard feature of Internet radio networks that serve music online. The listener can tune into any of dozens of stations covering such genres as Classic Rock, Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Jazz, 80s music, 70s music, Oldies, New Age, Reggae, Country, Latin, Euro, Ambient, Lounge, Progressive, Techno and what not. Hours and hours of uninterrupted music at no cost – that’s the magnitude of the entertainment provided by Internet radio networks.

Internet radio networks are on the rise and the reason is not hard to understand. Much of their popularity can be attributed to the huge proliferation of Internet technologies. Among the most popular Internet radio networks are the ones that feature Internet Talk Radio. Streaming talk shows and discussions on a wide range of subjects have made them popular among serious listeners or those who carve for something more than just music from their e-radios. Internet talk radio programs host various talk shows with specialists on different subject matters who anchor the show.

No matter what skeptics might say, radio refuses to go out of fashion. The radio is probably the finest innovation in aural entertainment. Internet radio networks are nothing more than old wine in a new bottle. But, on the other hand, they are also a lot more than just that! While traditional radio broadcasters have often used the Internet to advertise or promote their shows, Internet radio technology has actually revolutionized the concept and simple programming requirements have taken it to the extent where individuals, organizations or anyone for that matter, can easily host their own Internet talk radio station from the comfort of their home.

Internet radio networks like Voice America make it easier to host your own Internet talk radio show. Such Internet radio networks not only provide you with the technology to host your Internet radio show but also give you a complete package of Internet streaming media broadcasting, proven support services in web, marketing, and interactive solutions that help you to make your mark and your presence known to the ever increasing Internet audience.

Step into the exciting world of Internet radio networks. The future of radio is here!

Simply put, an intranet application is a small internal website running within a secured business environment. Intranet is basically a network of computers in an organization that is used for sharing of data among the employees. An intranet application is also sometimes referred to as corporate portal or private business network. Depending on the requirements it needs to cater to, the intranet application can be basic in structure or exhaustive with complex interlinks and data exchanges. Stephen Lawton, a technical editor, introduced the term Intranet in 1995.

A typical intranet application works on HTML and TCP/IP, similar to internet. However, the basic difference is that the entire setup runs on LAN (Local Area Network). Intranet application development involves use of hardware with networking capabilities and software technologies that include web servers, browsers, TCP/IP, Ethernet, and WiFi systems. When the organization uses internet on the same network, the intranet application is usually configured behind a firewall through a gateway so that unauthorized access is restricted.

Intranet applications should ideally allow the employees at levels to access required information, take decisions, and perform in an effective manner. Thus, the intranet application development cycle must be carefully planned and accomplished. Following steps can be considered when designing an intranet application.

Define objectives – set the guidelines for which the intranet is being developed and will be used, and so on.

Prepare the intranet plan – chart out the structure of the intranet, hardware and software that will be used, number of users and their access rights, nature of the information available on it.

Design and implement intranet application – having acquired the necessary resources complete the intranet designing, deployment, and other implementation tasks.

Create awareness about the intranet – promote the intranet among the relevant users so that it is effectively used and the set objectives are fulfilled.

There are many advantages of intranet application, foremost being improved productivity and reduced costs.

Faster access to information and updates allows the employees to make quicker decisions and take actions, thus improving the overall productivity of the organization.

Intranet applications facilitate accurate flow of targeted information across verticals and horizontals, which could possibly reduce number of emails floating around in an organization.

Important policy documents, training materials, company knowledge documents can be maintained on the intranet application and can be accessed from a single source when required.

There is no need to maintain physical copies of information or other documents and hence intranet applications prove to be cost effective solutions.

Though intranets offer many advantages, it is required that intranet application development is robust enough to handle multiple users at a time, and at that same time ensure that corporate confidentiality is maintained.

There is a term nowadays that we read about on the net, Web 2.0. What is Web 2.0 exactly and how is it related to social networking.

Coined by Tim O’Reilly in a conference in 2004, the term has been further refined. Wikipedia defines Web 2.0 is a new format for web development and design that highlights communication, information sharing, interoperability and collaboration on the World Wide Web.

Social Networking allows people to meet and connect on the net which is a platform of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 allows the medium for which interconnection occurs. The creation of profiles allows interconnectivity between individuals or groups. Other areas of Web 2.0 are:

Ø Message Boards

Ø RSS Feeds

Ø Audio and Video Capability

Ø Instant Messengers

Ø Blogs

Ø Social Groups

Web 2.0 directed towards communication and this is the base of which Social Networking is all about. News or updates can be broadcasted to subscribers at an instant. Blogs and the ability to place comments allow a person to share thoughts and experiences to a whole network.

These are the popular social networking sites that are Web 2.0:

Ø Facebook

Ø YouTube

Ø Twitter

Ø Linkedln

Ø Wikipedia

Ø MySpace

Ø WordPress

Ø Blogger

Ø Flickr

The above is just a partial list and nowadays, a person can have several subscriptions or memberships to these sites. Every site listed uses content made by users or subscribers and these are ranked by the search engines. If one has a good blog or gallery, this gains popularity among the network members. This can then be used to get traffic or be part of marketing efforts.

Web 2.0 is a means of communicating in a convenient way with the use of manageable applications. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds sends updates or changes about a page to the subscribers email. People who follow a particular niche need not worry anymore about not getting information. With Web 2.0, this feature is an inherent part and this is what makes the platform so usable to marketing efforts as well.

Google and Yahoo Groups are companies that make use of this technology. They usually send important information about the company to the people who signed up and belong to the group.

Many companies are shifting to the Web 2.0 platform for reasons that it is conducive for communication thus can really boost business. The format also allows creation of blogs, websites, relaying or getting information in an effortless manner. Web 2.0 is the foundation of business and personal social networking.

Small business networking events can help you find existing opportunities that may not be available through other marketing channels. Taking a consistent and professional approach to networking as part of a long term strategy can help you find out about:

What other businesses can do for you.

What opportunities exist to sell your products/services.

What your competitors are doing.

Many business owners who are new to networking make the mistake of trying to sell to everyone they meet. No-one likes a pushy sales person. If you go to small business networking events with the mindset that you need to sell there and then you are likely to fail.

Network events – insights

The purpose is to leave an impression not to make a sale.

The people you meet are likely to know someone who can benefit can your products/services.

The aim to to build long term relationships. Not to make a quick sale.

Listen to your target market, listen to their needs, then fit your solutions to their business requirements.

Small business networking events can be free of paid for so even startup companies with a tighter budget can attend. That’s not to say that some of the paid for events aren’t worthwhile either.

Enterprise Network events cover the following areas:

Manufacturing Network

Finance & Professional Services

Technology in Manufacturing

Creative & Digital Industries

Women in Business

Innovation

Enterprise coaches and enterprise hubs also benefit early stage businesses. Growing a business in a recession can be tough but we’re all in the same boat to get over to a small business networking event and talk to other business owners.
